Puffins on Skomer Island
The Atlantic Puffins on Skomer Island form the largest colony in Southern Britain.
Skomer is located less than a mile off the Pembrokeshire coast and also boasts the largest breeding population of Manx Shearwater in the world.
Each year around 6000 breeding pairs return to spend the spring and summer on Skomer.
They nest in burrows underground and the female lays a single white egg which will hatch in June. Both parents will then take turns to incubate.
Late July the birds depart the island and return to a life at sea.
The Puffin is a member of the Auk family.
They are sometimes called ‘sea parrots’ or ‘clowns of the sea.
